Phill Brush and Stephen Castillo met via Craigslist in 2018. Stephen had written a handful of songs and had no idea what to do with them. Phill had owned a doghouse bass for a few months and loved country music. To say they started at the bottom would be an understatement.
The boys founded The Western Express in 2019 and over the next three years, they played hundreds of shows—virtually every dancehall west of the Brazos, every brewery or winery with a name, and every beer joint they could find.
Since 2022, The Western Express has been featured as an official SXSW showcase artist, played at the Houston and Austin Rodeos, and opened shows for Kinky Friedman and The Wilder Blue.
